World Championships Day 2 3rd & Final sets skated + Fancy Skating |
New Exciting Format - Overall World Figure & Fancy Skating Champions!
A competitor may choose to only compete the Figure Compositions and not the Fancy Skating Composition, vice versa or something in between.
A skater can compete solely in the Fancy Skating segment but to receive the highest rank for one's talent and vie to win the overall title, one should attempt the Figure Compositions.
If one can Fancy Skate, then a skater has an untapped capacity that can be released to experience more in skating.
A skater may choose to omit a composition in the world competition but the missed opportunity automatically ranks the skater with the lowest rank in that omitted segment.
|
BladesSkaters may compete with any type of blade (eg. Free Skating, Figure, Dance or Hockey) in the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships. Cleaner edges and turns can usually be achieved on a radii of hollow greater than 1 inch (25mm).
If skaters need help with their equipment or blade acquisition contact the World Figure Sport Office for professional help at
518-304-3029. |
High Tech
During the Championship, indoor drones may be used to fly over the ice surface to take overhead photographs after the skaters clear the ice and before the ice surface.
|
Look cool & sharp
Championship skaters should take the opportunity to wear athletically attractive attire. Wear something memorable so that the photos appropriately highlight the competition in a visually memorable way.

Donations:
The World Figure Sport Society, not-for-profit 501 (c)(3), helps the competitors by waiving entry fees when athletes help the not-for-profit to exist by securing donations. The World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships & Festival operates from donations. Similar to cycling racing World Figure Sport's athletes help to raise money so World Figure Sport can grant their entry and help others. For example, the goal for each championship skater competing in the entire world championship is to secure 6 individuals to donate $250 or 15 individuals to donate $100 in their honor to the World Figure Sport Society, an IRS 501c(3) approved charity.
When donations are obtained not only is the championship skater's entry granted but WFS funds the World Championships on black ice and awards scholarships to help other skaters to learn Figure & Fancy Skating. For more information, contact the office by email or phone 518-304-3029. World Figure Sport looks forward to seeing the competitors great skating and to receiving your support!

Creative Figure Composition:
Brief Explanation: The 2019 Creative Figure Composition is actually choreographed by the skater. The skaters should craft a master Creative Figure Composition without constraint on a specified ice canvas. Meaning number of turns, types (including crosscuts), circle size, pattern shape, changes of edge, changes of feet, and direction are at the sole discretion of the skater. Compositions must be skated solely by the skate blades on the feet and not previously drawn on the ice by the heel of the blade. Only the blade attached at the sole of the foot is allowed no other body parts are allowed to craft its pattern. Skaters must repeat the pattern 6 times within the maximum allotted time of 6 minutes (foot and edge are entirely up to the skater). The entire Figure Composition is at the sole discretion of the skater but must remain in the assigned ice canvas. The Creative Figure Composition will be skated as the 4th Figure in the 2nd set on the final World Championship day. Penalties for falls, hands touching the ice and crossing the ice canvas lines with be taken by the Chief Referee.

World Fancy Skating
|
Fancy Skating is ranked in (7) categories. Please keep these (7) categories in mind when building the Fancy Skating Composition for performance: 1) Edge & stroking mastery 2) Vitality and originality creating an emotional effect with choreography 3) Musicality 4) Beauty of positions 5) Overall skating mastery obtained when skating/gliding on one foot 6) Overall visual mastery obtained by a world class Figure & Fancy Skating Composition package... (One should ask the question if the quality of music editing, costuming, hair, make-up, and clean skates enhance or distract from the skater's overall visual effect?) 7) Audience Appeal |
Competitors create an original Fancy Skating Composition for their on-ice performance without constraint. The number of rotations in any type of Flying Figures will not have precedence over the quality of execution, flight of fancy, originality, and musical necessity when performed. Fancy Skating is a choreographed original composition to music competed by the skater to further originality and skill in the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships.
Contorted positions, bent lines, and contrived bombastic use of body, arms, and legs (including excessive grabbing foot or blade) are not considered valuable in a Fancy Skating Composition. Therefore, unnecessary use is detrimental to grace. Competitors should strive to maintain exquisite world class positions and extensions that are superbly executed and sustained throughout the entire on-ice composition. Skaters should focus on beauty of positions originating from the edge of one's blade and carried through a pointed foot into the body to the top of the head.
Every edge, extension, nuance, and expression should flow together on the ice originating solely from the musical necessity. The purpose of the Fancy Skating Composition with music is to unite the skaters profound technically mastery of Figure Compositions into a timeless expression of the art & sport of skating with musical compositions, thereby transcending oneself and the audience.

Competitors may edit their musical composition from any of the 10 composers listed above or combination of the 10 composers. Instrumental Only - Maximum musical length 5 minutes (may be a less - length that best suits the competitor).
Accounting & Tie-breaks
The accountants will sum the Figure Ranking for each skater. The lowest sum obtains the highest Championship Rank (similar to stroke play in golf).
If a tie occurs after the first day, the ranking of the last figure skated breaks the tie.
If a tie occurs in the first three positions on the Championship day, the tied skaters resume competition and skate the LFO Winged Diamond Cross-cut to break the tie.
During a World Championship Medal tie-break all examiners judge the overall tracings on the ice of the figure after the skaters leave the ice.
Ties are only broken for the Fancy Skating Compositions, when a skater elects to perform a Figure Composition and obtains an additional rank.

Judging:
The judging panel will solely judge the Figures left on the ice by the skaters. After a flight has completed its figures and leaves the ice, the judging panel will enter onto the ice to rank each Figure pattern, unaware of whom skated a particular Figure. The judges will rank each Figure from first through eighth (Figure Rank). The judges will only know the patch letter. The patch ice will be marked for the judges by the following 12 letters:
K through V
Judges will take into account all the necessary factors of a great Figure in this World Figure Championship including: clean edges, turns, tracings, centers and alignment of all circles.
Judges and Skaters should be striving to deliver good form (their personal best) and be role models of sportsmanship throughout the Championship.
