FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE on August 16, 2015
Just a quick note to support this event with my words and thoughts since I can no longer be there in person due to personal reasons. As soon as I heard about the World Figure Championship and Figure Festival I wanted to be a part of that experience. It is a scenic 6 hour drive to Lake Placid from Toronto and from what I could tell many people from the skating world were making the pilgrimage to support the event. I dusted off my patch boots and started training! I was amazed at how easily I created a rather circular circle but how difficult it was to keep a clean edge. The ability to glide on only one side of my blade was practically gone. Where were my open three turns and who cut the bunny ears off the tops of my brackets?!
It took my coach, Michael Jiranek, years to get me to really buy into what Figures meant to my skating but also how much personal pride and enjoyment I could get from 2 hours of moving meditation. While performing them, I gained peace and a zen like spirit. Now that I am older, I am reminded of what I knew to be true, that they were very good for my body as well. Core strength and flexibility are needed to execute the tracings.
We did figures, had the power of focus and we all built our bodies in a safe environment. In only a few hours on the ice doing figures again I was reminded of all the positive things young skaters missed out on without them. As a competitor, one of my main motivations was not letting someone else win something that I could win. I wanted to come to Placid and once again feel that excitement of trying trying to win a competition. I wish all the competitors well and encourage people to go and support it. I hope everyone has a great time being a part of a new skating history!
Yours in skating,
